HDFC was formed in 1993 in affiliation with the Oregon Division of the U.S. Fencing Association. Our fencers currently compete in local and national tournaments including North American Cups, Junior Olympics, and National Championships. Members have obtained entrance and scholarships to such prestigious colleges as Standford, Duke, and the US Air Force Academy.
The club is open three nights a week, and members of all skill levels meet for open fencing, lessons, and more.
Although there are three types of competition swords, we primarily fence foil and epee. The club participates in Oregon Division and Regional Youth tournaments, and hosts at least one event each year.
A noble sport - fencing, the art of swordsmanship, has been practiced for centuries; first, to train for deadly combat... and now for Olympic gold and personal growth. For serious fencers, college scholarship opportunities abound, along with chances to travel and compete. The sport develops agility, strength, speed and cunning. Through fencing, one can acquire the reflexes of a boxer, the legs of a high jumper and the concentration of a tournament chess player. It's a very basic human thing. There is the honor and chivalry component, the idea that one can score and defend, and one controls not only oneself, but ones opponent as well, all with one hand. These things show the amazing skill one has with their own body; it's irresistible. After one finishes trying to destroy the other person, the two fencers shake hands and salute. Fencing is the most poetic of sports and, most important, its fun for all ages! Join the club, join the fun!
